Chapter One

1.      Who is telling this story?

Huckleberry Finn the protagonist of the story, through his eyes the reader sees and judges the South, its faults and his redeeming qualities.

2.     Who is Tom Sawyer? What is the name of his story?

Huck Finn's best friend. Tom loves role-playing games and creates a gang of thieves. Later he and Huck will live together with Sally, Tom's aunt, and Huck pretends to be Tom while Tom pretends to be his younger brother Sid.

3.     Why does Huck live with the Widow Douglas?

Because after Huck and Tom discovered hidden money and received twelve thousand dollars worth of gold in return, Judge Thatcher invested the money for them and Huck was adopted by the widow Douglas and Miss Watson, who went out of their way to raise him properly.

4.     Who is Jim?

Huck's partner, he is a runaway slave and provides him with friendship and protection as the two travel along the Mississippi on his raft.

 

Chapter Two

1.      Why is Huck’s father angry?

Because Huck goes to school and ignores him, runs away and doesn't want to be with him.

2.     Why does Huck’s father want his son’s money?

Because everyone wants money, and he thinks he belongs to him.

3.     Why does Huck escape from his father?

At first, Huck enjoys life in the cabin, but after receiving frequent beatings he decides to escape. When his father leaves for town, Huck seizes the opportunity.

4.     Why does Huck put the pig’s blood on the floor?

To escape and have his father think it was his blood.

 

Chapter Three

1.      Why is Jim scared when he sees Huck on the island?

Because Jim, like the rest of the townspeople, thought Huck was dead and was scared to see him.

2.     Why is Jim on Jackson’s Island?

Because he heard the widow's plan to sell him to a slave trader and he escaped.

3.     What does jim find in the floating house that he doesn’t want Huck to look at? What else do they find?

They find a dead man in a corner of the house. Jim goes to inspect the body and realizes that it is Pap, Huck's father.

4.     Why does Jim hide when they sail back to the island?

So that they do not discover and capture it.

 

Chapter Four

1.      Why does Huck get dressed as a girl?

Huck returns to town dressed as a girl to pick up some news.

2.     What news does Huck learn in town?

As Huck talks to a woman, he learns that both Jim and Pap are suspects in his murder. The woman then tells Huck that she believes Jim is hiding on Jackson Island.

3.     How much is the rewar offered for capturin Jim?

There is a reward of $300 for anyone who captures him.

4.     What makes Huck frightened?

They discover that there are three thieves in the wreck, two of whom are debating whether to kill the third. He then freaks out and changes the plan.

5.     What are Huck and Jim’s plans when they start their trip on the river?

Their goal is to get to Cairo, where they can take a steamboat down the Ohio River to the Free States.

 

Chapter Five

1.      What happens to Huck and Jim when they try to attract the steamboat’s attention?

The steamboat runs over the raft, forcing Huck and Jim to jump overboard. They part again as they swim for their lives.

2.     How does Huck end up in Colonel Grangerford’s house?

Huck finds the shore and is immediately surrounded by dogs. After managing to escape, he is invited to live with a family called the Grangerfords.

3.     How do Huck and Jim find eacher other again?

Huck is treated well at the Grangerford home and he discovers that Jim is hiding in a nearby swamp.

4.     How are they able to continue their trip down the river?

All is quiet until an old family feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons is rekindled. In one day all the men in the Grangerford family are killed. Amid the chaos, Huck runs up to Jim, and together they start sailing downstream again.

 

Chapter Six

1.      Which two unexpected passengers do Huck and Jim have on their raft?

Huck rescues two phonies known as the Duke and the King.

2.     What kind of people are the duke and the king?

They are scammers / phonies.

 

Chapter Seven

1.      What does the king do in the ‘performance’? How long does it last?

In the show, the King parades naked for a few minutes.

2.     How do the king and the duke make $465 in the town?

The men are too embarrassed to admit they wasted their money like that, and they tell everyone the show was phenomenal, which is why the next night's show is a hit.

3.     Do you think Huck and Jim approve of their companions’ behaviour?

No, they do not approve of your behavior.

 

Chapter Eight

1.      Why doesn’t Huck leave when the king and the duke get drunk?

To help the three girls.

2.     Why does Huck go to Silas Phelps’ house?

To rescue Jim, which is where he is.

3.     What is the relationsship between Aunt Sally and Tom Sawyer? Why does she think that Huck is Tom?

Sally is Tom Sawyer's aunt.

Because Huck immediately pretends to be Tom.

4.     Who does Tom say he is when he sees his aunt?

When the real Tom arrives, he pretends to be his younger brother, Sid Sawyer.

Chapter Nine

1.      Why does Tom’s plan fail?

Huck, Jim, and Tom manage to escape, but Tom is shot in the leg.

2.     What does Tom tell his Aunt Sally about Jim?

It is said that Jim is in fact a free man, because the widow had passed away and had freed him in her will.

3.     Why did Tom help Jim escape instead of telling his aunt the truth from the start?

Because Huck was his friend and Jim was a friend of his friend.

4.     Who was the dead man in the house on the river?

Huck's father.

5.     Do you think Huck would be happy living with Tom’s relatives? Explain your answer.

Yes, because they would treat him very well, although he refuses, based on the fact that he already tried that lifestyle before and did not go with him.
